Arnold Eagles Hawks u11s vs Edwalton u11s Semi Final Cup Game

Today’s starting line-up was:

Ava (GK), Jess, Izzy, Bethany, Heidi, Peyton, Millie (Subs – Thea, Lucy, Katie)

We arrived in good spirits ahead of the Cup Semi Final, following a great run to reach this stage and looking forward to playing our football. Following a last minute pitch change from grass to 3G, we were greeted however, to a pitch which was at least half the size of what we should have been playing on. Nevertheless, we warmed up, readying ourselves for kick-off.

At the whistle, Edwalton put us under immediate pressure, with any Eagles attacks being ran out of play due to the narrow pitch. Against the run of play, Hawks were awarded a free kick a few yards outside of Edwalton’s penalty area. After steady herself, Peyton ran up and smashed the ball home, giving the keeper very little chance.

The Hawks desperately tried to get a handle on the game, trying to break away from the Edwalton midfield and play their open, passing game. Bethany and Heidi were trying their best to employ this style of play, but didn’t have the room to play with, together with some resolute defending by the opposition. Jess and Izzy were trying their best in defence for the first 15min, but seemed slow to react in the early stages, giving the opposition more impetus to get back into the game. This was only thwarted with Ava making some important saves and gathering the ball well. Lucy and Thea came on, with Thea continuing to make some perfectly well timed tackles and Lucy trying her best to make an impact on the game.

Edwalton’s pressure paid off however, when a loose ball in the box wasn’t cleared and stabbed home to level things up at 1-1. The closing stages of the first half saw Jess react quicker and make some better tackles. Millie up front was having little luck breaking free of the defence to mount any kind of attack despite her efforts.

Half time allowed the girls to get some water onboard and the coaching staff to get some important messages across, in terms of closing the ball down quicker, being strong and talking more for each other.

The second half saw a change of keeper, with Katie replacing Ava. It was more of the same as the second half started, with Katie being tested early on with a huge kick from their keeper and the bounce nearly catching the Hawk’s keeper out, but she adjusted well and caught it. The Hawks couldn’t seem to impose their flowing game, continuing to react slowly and any attacked being ran out of play. Hawks then paid the ultimate price, when another loose ball was pounced on and slotted home giving Edwalton a 2-1 lead.

Hawks immediately responded, applying pressure to the opposition with better work from Bethany, Heidi and Peyton. An equaliser nearly came from a corner, with Jess attempting a shot, but there wasn’t enough power, as she was off balance. As the minutes ticked down, Hawks threw everything they had at the opposition, with Izzy playing some great balls down the line. However, some continuous Edwaltonsubstitutions ensured that the Hawks rhythm was disrupted. To add insult to injury and with the last kick of the game, Edwalton got behind the Hawk’s defence and got another goal.

A great effort by the girls, especially in the second half, but it wasn’t to be this year unfortunately.

Girl of the Game for this match went to Peyton for her work rate and superb goal!
