Flyers County Cup Action
Posted by Ciara Button on 17 October 2023
Flyers played away yesterday in the Nottinghamshire County Cup against a young Southwell City side.
The game started quite evenly matched with both sides trying to find an edge, to snatch the lead. Chances were created on both sides but it was the Flyers who struck first. Chloe Cokayne broke through and finished a 1v1 to put the away team ahead.
This gave the Flyers a boost and they began to get into their stride looking dangerous on the attack. They continued to create chances and broke through the Southwell back line on a number of occasions, but the heroics of the home team's goalkeeper kept the score to 0-1.
However, there was nothing she could do when Chloe broke free of the defence again and fired a rocket into the top corner, to make it 0-2 Flyers.
This dominance continued for the rest of the first half, but a few minutes before half time, a lapse in concetration whilst defending a corner led to Southwell City pulling themselves back into the game, with a good finish from the edge of the box. Taking the game 1-2 into half time.
The second half started very much like the first, quite cagey. But once the Flyers settled into their rythym, it was business as usual. The chances were flowing, but the Southwell goalkeeper denied the Flyers further to prevent them from increasing their lead.
In the end, Flyers saw out the game and were the deserving winners and march into the next round of the County Cup!
