Home tie against Shirebrook Rangers

Avengers worked hard throughout this tough fixture against experienced side, Shirebrook Rangers. Shirebrook were big, tough, and dominated territory and possession for much of the game. For their part, Avengers soaked up the pressure, defending perhaps 30 corners, and wave after wave of attacking phases from the opposition.
For that reason, the first shout out has to go to the defence, starting with our goalkeepers, Evie and Cerys. Both had to make saves galore and must have been feeling the pressure at times – clean sheets for both are the best tribute you can get! Faith, Violet and Lilith were so solid and are becoming the backbone of our defence. They were supported by Laila, Jenny, and Ava who all played their part either in left or right of defence, or in our defensive central midfield position. All of these players kept their cool and did not give up – I’m surprised they had time to catch their breath, at times, to be honest.

Playing on the wings, we had Eliza, Maya, and Laila – all working back when needed, but playing balls out from defence to create moves going forward. Caitlin started the match up front and had a fantastic chance through on goal, but was just muscled off the ball at the last minute and couldn’t manage the finish – it’s coming though. Caitlin then played an important part as central midfielder.

The second half saw our best chances, and Eliza took the ball into the opposition box and scored with the ball going under the keeper – second in two games, so keep it up.  Next, with Maya and Leah breaking through at the same time – who would take the shot? –Maya eventually got there, only to have the ball bobble a bit and the chance was gone. Minutes later, Leah lay in wait on the half way line, received the ball and punted it forward into space for herself to run onto, kept her cool as she approached the goalie and slotted it past to secure the win.

Player of the match was Violet for her pivotal role in the centre of the defence.

Absolutely amazing from Avengers. Well done, team – be very proud of yourselves!
